Gitga’at Txalgiv First Nations and Cetacea Lab are premiering an educational documentary series on the importance of humpback whales in their ecosystem and bringing awareness to the residents about the dangers whales could face soon.
Kitimat, B.C. – May 5th, 2021
Gitga’at Txalgiv First Nations and Cetacea Lab have decided to premiere a series of small documentary videos to the population of Kitimat, to highlight the importance of the humpback whale’s ecosystem and educate how fragile whales can become when boat noise and pollution is introduced; Kitimat residents have been invited to the premiere of the first set of videos in the amphitheatre of Mount Elizabeth Secondary School on June 17th, 2021 at 9:45 pm PST.
Cetacea Lab and Gitga’at Txalgiv First Nations have been cooperating for a decade to create large amounts of data through many research expeditions around the coastal region of Kitimat. The documentary series is aimed to increase education around the humpback whale population that currently resides and hunts at the Kitimat coastal region. Herman Meuter, a humpback whale researcher at Cetacea Lab, has decided to promote the premiere of the videos and invite the people of Kitimat to learn about the various important ecosystem changes the whales are going through due to the increasing climate change on June 17th.
Herman Meuter has been a researcher in Hartley Bay for more than a decade, working directly with the Gitga’at Txalgiv First Nations, he understands firsthand all the information that the humpback whales’ research will provide in the documentaries, and he is eager to answer any questions that might arise during the premiere. Heman Meuter said, “After so many years of research, I am finally able to share some findings to the Kitimat community, and I will do my best to be ready to answer any questions that might arise throughout the premiere.”
Cetacea Lab is part of the North Coast Cetacean Society. This research society has been studying humpback and killer whales for many years and is currently having ongoing research with the Gitga’at Txalgiv First Nations permission.
